Yes! Once The Issachar Gatekeeper Series is complete, I have a myriad of storylines for other YA books. So many ideas, so little time to write! Oh my!
The simple answer is — the story writes itself. As ideas present to me, I start to see characters and scenes develop. Whenever I get an idea, I quickly sketch it out and then place this into a large binder, organized by theme. Then, as I begin writing, I refer to the notebook often. Eventually it will contain character sketches, verses, poems, and scene and setting ideas along with unique objects, that could become characters, such as the talking doorknockers in book three.
From everywhere! I have an overactive imagination which is a good thing and a bad thing—my brain doesn’t have an OFF button! I especially love getting my ideas from the Bible. There is a plethora of wonderful ideas hidden inside. There is so much scope for the imagination with the beautiful and abundant images—they just scream for a chance to dance in a fantasy.
Yes! Book four, The Ghost in the Mirror is under construction! Things are heating up for Lucy Hornberger and her best friend Schuyler Williams as they chase after the dark prince Darnathian. They must prevent him from destroying the kingdom. He has obtained a foundation stone and Lucy is worried he may decipher the secrets behind the ancient deep magic.

Read, journal, and study a variety of writers in your genre. Everything you need to know is there, story structure, character development, plot, and dialogue. The Bible says to “study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed.” It’s from 2nd Timothy 2:15, NIV.
Yes! As a child, I would fill journals with stories I wrote to pass the time. Once, in my eighth-grade English class, the teacher challenged us to write a story about what was happening in one of the photos he had hung on the wall. The murder story I wrote made his jaw drop and I got an A+!
I want my readers to know the God of the Bible. He loves all of us and wants to have a relationship with each of us, just like the heroine of the Issachar Gatekeeper series has with the all-powerful entity she comes to know. The power of God can seem like magic. I want my readers to believe in God’s magic.
Think of these books as tools in a toolbox. While these books are ghost stories, the stories introduce spiritual concepts which can be used to start a discussion.
Too many young people have either drifted away from God, or don’t even know who God is and why he is important. I want to challenge their thinking to investigate for themselves the truths of the Bible.
I had a favorite little book of Bible stories when I was a child. It was lost over time, but I wanted to give readers a glimpse of those wonderful stories, rewritten in an entertaining manner to introduce them to Biblical concepts.
